“Think about what Duane or Aron would do and you will be dandy fine!” Words to certainly live by as today marks one of the most important days of 2011. As I sit here in this comfortable preferred airline seat (courtesy of Air Canada free of charge), I wonder why I am just a tad bit stressed over the events that have happened thus far. First of all – AIRPORTS. After today, I’ve concluded that attitudes towards airport navigation are polarized on the easiness to hardness scale. Sometimes (as it has happened to me in the past), everything works like clockwork. You are dropped off at the right terminal, the doorman greets you with a simple “how are you doing today” and you proceed to the check in counter that is a mere 20 feet away from you. The line-ups are scarce and there are so many idle workers…just…idling of course! You drop your bags off and head straight into the departures terminal where again an army of attendants are ready to take a glimpse of your private life through digital screens and the use of ultraviolet light. Total time spent in the airport? Let’s just say 1 hour for good measure.
Other times though…things simply hit the fan too fast, too soon. On the other end of the spectrum (where I was just today), you are first given a trolley to hold your bags. The kicker? One of the wheels doesn’t spin. Rent another one you say? NO COINS OF COURSE. Not the worst thing that could happen though at the time. It’s certainly not as bad as coming into the terminal 20 minutes before your flight is scheduled to take off. Thankfully I was there 2 hours beforehand. But Wayne can it get worse? Of course it can! After scurrying my awesome trolley thrice around the terminal, I eventually realized that I was in the wrong building. “You are supposed to be in terminal 1 sir”. “Really?” I replied. “Is it walkable?” She laughed at me of course and then directed me to the appropriate paths that would take me there. About 45 minutes had elapsed up to this point and I knew I had to scoot scoot like a race horse. And so I eventually make it to the correct baggage drop off only to see 100 OTHER PEOPLE IN LINE. At this point I was sweating through my tailored shirt and realized I had no choice but to bite the bullet and stand at the back of the bunch. “Tokyo for 1PM?” says a man in a soft tone. “Yes that’s me!” “Right this way sir!” he replied. Yes! My luck is changing after all. 10 minutes later I’m baggage free and on my way to the boarding area. But why would I begin to merge optimistic content with this section of the blog – when really it should be talking about how bad my actual experience was. Well ladies and gentlemen, that’s because it got worse. I had this extremely stupid idea that I should leave my Canon 60D on the railing of the treadmill expressway (the horizontal elevator machines). Of course, I didn’t intend to just flat out leave it there without a purpose. I wanted to get a shot of me walking down the pathway while the device recorded from its mounted position (or so I thought it was mounted). As I walked I turned my head just to ensure the camera was ok. I saw it rumbling and then CLACK – the sound of instant pain in the brain.
Thankfully, the camera is ok and functioning properly. I did a bit of research and discovered that the camera body can sustain itself from heavy hits against the ground or any hard surface for the matter. This is also confirmed in the numerous forum posts I read to give me reassurance that everything is ok. Time for the long haul leg of the trip. Stay in touch!
